Tips for Grand National Betting

The Aintree Grand National will take place on the 10th of April 2010 and, for 15 minutes, the eyes of a nation will be focused on the 40 horses negotiating their way over the 4m 4f course in what promises to be heavy ground this year. Betting on the race is pretty open as ever but there are some tempting odds out there for anyone looking to have a flutter. So here she goes -Genie’s Grand National Tips for Aintree 2010.

Grand National Horses To Watch

Big Fella Thanks, last year’s sixth place finisher, heads the market as a clear favourite at 7/1. Paul Nicholls’ horse is coming off a win at Newbury last month in the Greatwood Gold Cup Handicap Chase. He looked comfortable when taking the lead from 3 out, doing just enough to hold the lead without ever opening a clear lead. For me though finishing sixth out of 17 finishers last year does not suggest that this horse deserves the favourite tag and at these paltry odds Genie will be steering clear.

Genie is leaning towards backing the same horse that he backed last year; Black Apalachi. The DT Hughes trained 11 year old may be getting on a bit in years and has been lightly ridden since last year’s Grand National. Jockey Denis O’Regan looked in complete control in last year’s race, leading into the third last fence when he battered the fence and fell. It looked for all the world that it was just a lack of concentration as the horse seemed to have plenty of running left in him at the time.  This may well be Black Apalachi’s last throw of the dice and you get the feeling that Hughes has had only one race in mind for this classy jumper.

NB: Black Apalachi should be favoured especially as the ground should be heavy. It cannot be too heavy for this horse who had a mightily impressive 74 length victory in the Beechers Chase in 2008 when the ground was like a swamp.

Black Apalachi can be backed at 14/1 with Ladbrokes, Will Hill and VC Bet and is available at 12/1 with Paddy Power and Bet365.

Last year’s mpressive winner, Mon Mome, deserves honourable mention in the betting at 11/1 along with Vic Venturi at 20/1.

Tricky Trickster and Arbor Supreme are too inexperienced to inspire any confidence while Niche Market should be avoided at all costs if the ground is any way soft.
